2024 Landlord Tenant Handbook Update

In accordance with R.I. General Laws § 42-64.34-2, effective January 1, 2024, the Department of Housing will create a written guide for consumers relating to the rights and duties of landlords and tenants pursuant to Chapter 18 of Title 34 of the R.I. General Laws, the “Residential Landlord and Tenant Act.” This guide shall be posted on the website of the Department of Housing, shall be published in both English and Spanish, and shall be updated, at minimum, on a biennial basis.

Beginning in January 2024, the Department of Housing will accept comments on the Landlord Tenant Handbook document posted here (please see link below). The Rhode Island Center for Justice has provided this preliminary draft document, which was developed in collaboration with HousingWorks RI, Rhode Island Legal Services, and other partners, for public comment and review.

We want to hear from you! We encourage our housing partners and members of the public to share their comments on this draft and provide other resources that may be helpful in crafting this resource.

  • Written comments can be sent to Nicholas Freeman at Nicholas.Freeman@housing.ri.gov until 3/8/24.
  • A public meeting will be held on February 28th at 11 am in Conference Room 2A at the Department of Administration (One Capitol Hill, Providence, RI 02908) to receive feedback and comments on the draft document.
